Resurrecting Europe-Asia trade route
Minister announces goal to strengthen economic ties with Central Asia
The Swiss Economics Minister, Johann Schneider-Ammann, says that China’s ‘Silk Road’ project could allow Switzerland to strengthen economic opportunities in Central Asia. Speaking after a visit to the region, the minister said that the project could open up many possibilities to the mutual benefit of Switzerland and Central Asia.
The development project, officially known as the ‘Belt and Road Initiative’, aims to resurrect the ancient trade route between Europe and Asia and focuses on connectivity and cooperation between Eurasian countries, primarily the People's Republic of China, the land-based Silk Road Economic Belt and the ocean-going Maritime Silk Road.
