Two teenagers who were having a romantic night time stroll along the River Rhine in the canton of Schaffhausen had to be rescued by police after they ended up on an island in the middle of the river, by mistake.

The 17-year-olds were walking next to the river near Rüdlingen when the girl fell in the water late on Monday night. Her boyfriend jumped into the river to rescue her and they swam until they reached what they thought was the mainland.

When they tried to make their way home they discovered, to their horror, that they had mistakenly swum out to an island in the middle of the river. The boy’s mobile phone still worked and he called his father who then contacted police. The couple were rescued in a police dinghy.
