Church bells replaced by ringtones at Lucerne chapel
From last night until the end of this month, mobile phone ringtones can be heard instead of church bells at a chapel in Lucerne, as part of an art project in the city.
The idea initially began as a joke when art students from the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences were asked to take part in renovation work at St Peter’s Chapel, which is next to Chapel Bridge, one of Lucerne’s famous landmarks.
Yesterday, a mixing desk was installed in the bell tower of the chapel. At the whim of two art students who are behind the project, mobile phone ringtones will be played through a loudspeaker near the bells, although not at night.
The chapel’s proper bells have been out of action for the past few months due to the renovation work.
