A study by the UBS Optimus Foundation examined figures from various child protection organizations across the country.

The foundation say the high number of cases should be a ‘wake-up call’.

Over 3% of children are referred to a child protection agency or the police every year. The main reasons are neglect and physical and psychological abuse.

The foundation points out the numbers show only those who have been reported so believe the real figures could be much worse and the level of support varies across the country.
