Swiss government reacts with caution after Singapore summit
The Swiss government is reacting with caution following the summit with President Trump and the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
The State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Pascale Baeriswyl, says the meeting is a ‘first step’ – but added that serious diplomacy still needs to be done.
The Swiss press is being far more cynical – the opinion is the North Koreans won the summit and the hermit kingdom’s leader came across as confident and experienced, according to Swiss television.
The NZZ newspaper says the summit couldn’t have gone better for Kim. The North Koreans didn’t have to make any new concessions.
In an editorial, the paper says if it turns out North Korea gets aid without doing anything in return then the summit will be a boomerang that smacks Trump in the face.
