Swiss migration authorities want to check Facebook accounts
Federal authorities want to be able access Facebook accounts of asylum seekers to find out more about them.
A spokesman for the State Secretariat for Migration says being able to check social media accounts will give authorities a better idea of a claimant’s background.
The process has already been backed by the courts. In one case a Nigerian national was refused asylum as his Facebook account revealed he was actually living in Spain where he was running a business.
He appealed the decision, saying the social media check was invalid and illegal. The Federal Administrative Court disagreed.
