French president visit closes roads in Geneva border region
Major traffic disruption is expected today around the Geneva border region with the Pays de Gex as French president Emmanuel Macron is visiting Ferney-Voltaire to open the newly renovated Chateau de Voltaire.
Police have closed several roads in the town and security at the border crossings will be enhanced.
The chateau has been closed to the public since 2015. In that time it has been totally renovated at a cost of EUR 9m.
The French writer and philosopher lived in Ferney from 1759 to 1778. Voltaire demanded the town change its spelling. When he moved in, the last letter was an ‘X’- he said there were too many places in the area ending with ‘X’ – so he said the letter should be changed to ‘Y’. The town complied.
We’ll keep you up to date with the traffic situation throughout the morning.
