Drivers tackled major delays at Gotthard after fire
Holiday makers suffered major jams at the Gotthard Tunnel over the long weekend as the San Bernadino tunnel had to be closed due to a bus fire.
The German tourist coach caught fire on Friday afternoon. There were 22 people on the bus. There were no serious injuries. The tunnel will remain closed until Thursday at the earliest say authorities.
The closure meant all traffic was diverted to the Gotthard which saw tailbacks of up to 28 km at times – the longest jams since 1999. Those problems were also during the Pentecost holiday.
The journey back yesterday was difficult too. A broken down car closed the Gotthard yesterday evening for more than an hour. After the tunnel was reopened, motorists had to wait for up to an hour to get through. The jams only started to lift at 10pm last night.
Andrea Lehmann from the traffic monitoring company Via Suisse says drivers should look for alternative routes when crossing the Alps. He points out the Simplon, Lötschberg and Grosser Sankt Bernhard are not used enough and flowed well over the weekend.
