Government plans to cut childcare support
The government is withdrawing support to boost childcare in the country. The Federal Council says it’s up to the cantons to make sure there is sufficient childcare facilities.
There’s been federal support for childcare for the last 15 years. In that time the government has funded over 57,000 places.
But they’ve rejected the advice of the Commission for Science, Education and Culture and says the funding will be pulled.
The decision could be over turned by parliament.
Switzerland has a childcare crises where demand regularly outstrips supply – making it one of the most expensive countries in the world for childcare.
