Tesla battery caused fire following crash
An electric Tesla car burst into flames after a crash because of its battery. That’s what the Ticino fire service believe.
Last Thursday a 48 year old died when his car hit a barrier and overturned on an autoroute in the southern canton.
Fire investigators say they believe the battery suffered a ‘thermal runaway’. It’s when lithium-ion batteries can get hotter and hotter until they burst into flames.
It’s the same phenomena that caused the electric sports car that TV presenter Richard Hammond was driving to explode when he crashed in Sankt Gallen last year. He narrowly escaped with his life.
Tesla say they will work with local authorities to determine the cause of accident.
