Geneva government urges federal restrictions for online gambling
The Geneva cantonal government has taken the rare step of adopting a position on a federal vote.
In June the people will be asked if they want to bring in laws to curb internet gambling. Most gambling sites are operated by companies based outside Switzerland.
The Geneva president, Francois Longchamp, says he want to protect the revenues from the state lottery.
He’s urging voters to adopt stricter rules on internet gambling. He says Geneva benefits from CHF 37m a year from Loterie Romande. In all, the lottery generates over 200m for French speaking cantons.
He says more than CHF 300m is bet on line every year. He points out this is money that leaves Switzerland.
