Basel politician calls for foreigners to be charged to die in Switzerland
A local Swiss People’s Party politician in canton Basel-Country says those coming from outside the country to end their lives in Switzerland should be charged by the canton for the costs the tax payer has to pay.
When someone dies, cantonal authorities make sure the correct procedures were followed which involves the police and a state lawyer. Each death costs the state around CHF 2,000. Hans-Urs Spiess says foreign arrivals should, be charged. Swiss residents would be exempt.
The situation is being highlighted due to the high profile case of the 104 year old Australian scientist David Goodall who has arrived in Basel to end his life in the next few hours.
Goodall is due to hold a press conference later today.
