Government questions shipment of chemical to Syria
The government is asking for more information after a Swiss television report has revealed a chemical company sent 5 tonnes of Isopropanol to Syria. The chemical can be used to make the nerve agent sarin.
The shipment was in 2014 to a Syrian pharmaceutical company. The chemical is also used to make drugs.
The State Secretariat of Economic Affairs says there was no link between the company and the Syrian regime at the time.
Although Switzerland has imposed sanctions on Syria in line with the EU and Isopropanol is on the EU list – it was not banned by this country.
The Senate Security Policy Commission is asking for more information about the shipment.
