Police employee convicted of misuse of data
A former Basel police employee has been convicted of stealing confidential information from the force’s computer system and using it for personal use.
There were also allegations the Turkish born defendant sent information about Turkish nationals to Turkish authorities, but the court decided there was insufficient evidence to prove that.
The 38 year old man, identified only as YS, used the information to spy on his ex-wife and girlfriend.
In all, he searched the details of 162 different people – one fifth were Turkish nationals.
He’s been fined CHF 4,000 and has to pay half the court costs. The court did also award him damages following earlier media reports that claimed he was a Turkish spy.
