Lake Geneva polluted by plastics
A study of Lake Geneva shows the waters are suffering from the same problem as many of the oceans – plastic pollution.
Researchers from the University of Geneva have discovered the lake is contaminated with plastics and heavy metals.
Their findings have been published in the journal ‘Frontiers in Environmental Science’.
The study examined over 3,000 items collected from the shore in 2016. They included food packaging, cotton swabs and plastic fragments.
They also found mercury, lead and cadmium contamination. Researchers say the findings show many plastics have been in the waters for years.
