Train announcements could be computerized
The reassuring female voice that will be so familiar to all train travellers in Switzerland could be replaced by a computer.
Swiss Federal Railways are looking for a new system which can give train announcements at stations and will be more flexible.
Currently the announcements are restricted to the phrases that have been recorded – although there are hundreds.
Train managers are looking at a ‘text to speech’ system – which will mean using a synthetic voice.
One of the major questions – should the computer sound male or female? Swiss Federal Railways say research suggests people find a female voice more sympathetic. Perhaps better for announcing delays and cancellations.
