Number of Islamic investigations double in Geneva
The Geneva minister for security, Pierre Maudet, says the number of being investigated for suspected Islamic extremism has doubled in the last 12 months.
He was speaking to the Tribune de Genève newspaper.
He says the level of investigation varies, but some people are being followed by security services 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
But he says it’s not necessarily down to more people being radicalized, but more being reported. He stresses many local Muslim leaders are working closely with authorities and reporting people they feel are a possible threat.
Maudet adds it’s not those who leave Switzerland to fight abroad that worries him – it’s those who come back battle-hardened. In Geneva two have returned and are being monitored. One has been successfully reintegrated into society he says.
