Valais bid to host Winter Olympics under threat
Plans that Switzerland will host the 2026 Winter Olympics are under threat after a motion was accepted in parliament that the final decision should go to national vote.
The federal government has agreed to pay CHF 1bn towards the cost of hosting the games.
But organizers worry the move will end the dreams of bringing the games to canton Valais – and not because people may vote against the idea - although opinion polls show they may well do.
It’s the timing. The bid has to be lodged with the International Olympic Committee by January next year. But it will take several months for a national vote to be organized.
There are concerns the cost will go massively over budget. Other cities hosting the Olympics have ended up with deficits.
