Hundreds evacuated from Geneva apartment building after fire
Residents had to leave an apartment block in the middle of Geneva yesterday afternoon as a major fire caused so much damage, the building could now collapse.
The fire broke out at about 4.30 on the Rue de la Servette. Hundreds of people called the fire service as flames were visible from the top of the building. Nearby roads were closed and bus and tram services were severely disrupted.
There are no reports of injuries, except for one person who was treated for smoke inhalation.
128 firefighters tackled the blaze. Those evacuated were housed in civil defence shelters overnight. Geneva councilor, Remy Pagani says the building was privately owned and poorly maintained.
