Geneva loses cash due to unregistered dogs
Canton Geneva believes it is losing around CHF 600,000 a year due to people not registering their dogs, according to cantonal tax authorities.
It’s thought there are as many as 6,400 non-registered dogs. By law all dogs have to be chipped and owners have to pay a tax. Dog owners already contribute over 2 million francs.
The number of unregistered dogs is a surprise. It was calculated by using figures from a federal database and then subtracting the number of dogs registered in the canton.
There are a few exceptions, such as police and guide dogs. And strays in Geneva are virtually unheard of.
