Cantons seek deal with Airbnb for tourist tax
The online rental platform, Airbnb, is in talks with several cantons on how to collect a tourist tax on people visiting.
Zug has already reached an agreement which means the website takes the tax at the point of sale.
Other cantons are keen to reach a similar agreement – Geneva hopes to have a dal by the end of the year and Fribourg is said to be finalizing its talks.
The biggest problem is that tourist tax is set by communes in many areas – so the rate can change from village to village even in the same canton.
The agreements with cantons may also put limits on how often a property can be rented out in a year.
