Record breaking mountain rescue missions over New Year
Helicopter rescue services were busy over the New Year. On New Year’s Eve alone rescuers were called out 110 times – a new record.
The next day there were another 50 call outs.
Most of the emergencies were from skiers and snowboarders suffering injuries. The slopes were very busy over the holiday as many took advantage of the fresh snow.
Most of the problems were broken bones, back and shoulder injuries and concussion.
But there were also avalanches in canton Graubünden, triggering search and rescue missions.
The helicopter rescue service Rega was prepared for the high rate of call outs. Extra aircraft were on standby ahead of the busy weekend.
