Parliament elects Alain Berset to be president next year
The Swiss parliament has chosen Alain Berset, to be president next year. The president rotates every year, and as Berset was Vice President this year – so not really a surprise he’s been elected for 2018.
The cabinet minister retains their portfolio while president, so Berset will keep his Home Affairs position.
The role of president in Switzerland is largely ceremonial and does not have any extra powers. The president does chair the cabinet meetings and some extra committees.
