EU head in Bern for meeting
The head of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Junker, will be meeting the Swiss President, Doris Leuthard in Bern later today.
Relations between Switzerland and the EU have been improving recently. Ties were strained after the people voted to bring in quotas for EU citizens working in the country.
The government has worked hard to bring in a compromise. Quotas would threaten Switzerland’s inclusion in the single market.
The EU will be hoping Switzerland will continue to contribute to the EU’s cohesion plan – worth about a billion francs.
But there are also other areas of cooperation on the table. Such as recognition of the Swiss stock market, joining the carbon trading market and the EU trains agency to boost cross border rail traffic.
