Smartphone use behind wheel responsible for more accidents

National News // Nov. 22, 2017

Smartphone use behind the wheel is now the cause of more accidents than drinking and speed. Numbers from the Federal Roads Office show there are now more crashes down to inattention than any other cause.

There were 249 cases of inattention, compared to 124 for alcohol and 237 for speeding.

But a spokesman for the Accident Prevention Office says the number of accidents caused by phone use could be underestimated as drivers are unlikely to admit to using a phone if they have a crash – maybe making another excuse.

But the dangers of using a phone at the wheel seems to be known. 56% of drivers say they never use a phone while driving – according to a European survey.
