Basel checks legality of public pig slaughter

National News // Nov. 15, 2017

Basel authorities are investigating to see if the public slaughter of two pigs was legal. At the end of last month a crowd gathered in the town square of Sissach to watch the pigs killed by butchers.

A complaint has been filed by an animal rights activist. Beatrice Pfister says the killing was illegal as it didn’t take place in an abattoir and there wasn’t a vet on hand.

The butchers’ counter that there was a vet and the town had issued a temporary permit to allow the slaughter on the square.

They say many people were fascinated on how the pigs were killed. One girl at the event said she felt it was brutal, but it’s important to know where meat comes from.
