Millions lost to autoroute freeriders
The highway fund is losing around CHF 20m a year due to autoroute freeriders.
The government reckons around half a million people are regularly using the autroroute network and are either not showing a vignette or have faked one.
But only around 1,000 a year are caught.
The newspaper, Le Matin Dimanche, suggests it’s not worth the risk and highlights a story of a French driver who was fined well over CHF 1,000.
That amount would be a couple of decades of autoroute driving as the sticker is only CHF 40.
But in a few years it may be impossible to avoid. The cabinet is backing an automatic system using number plate recognition.
