Missing Calvin document to be returned to Geneva
A document signed by Calvin himself is to be returned to Geneva after being missing for more than 100 years.
But the canton didn’t know it was gone until, it went up for auction in New York last year.
It’s been in the hands of a family in Texas. It’s thought one of their relatives acquired it many years ago.
The auction house, Sotheby’s was alerted and stopped the sale. It was expected to sell for around USD 30,000.
The family will receive money as compensation - but paid for by donations. Part of the money is coming from an expat who wishes to remain anonymous – but says he wanted to make a gesture to his adopted city.
The matter didn’t have to go to court, the Swiss foreign ministry and the US Justice Department negotiated the return. It will arrive later today.
And what was the document signed by Calvin himself? It was a salary statement.
