Calls for Switzerland to rejoin Erasmus programme
Students are calling on the government to regain access to the EU’s Erasmus plus exchange programme.
The EU suspended Swiss access after the vote in 2014 to bring in quotas on EU citizens wishing to work in the country.
Currently Switzerland plans to rejoin in 2021 – but campaigners want that to be changed for next year. A petition with 10,000 signatures has been handed in.
The exclusion of the programme means Swiss students are now effectively banned from some of the best universities on the continent. Cambridge has not accepted Swiss students since 2014 for example.
The left wing Social Democratic Party is backing the campaigners and says not being part of Erasmus Plus is unacceptable.
