Switzerland calls on UN to check Libya detention centres

National News // July 25, 2017

Switzerland is demanding Libya open its migrant detention centres to the United Nations.

European Commission Switzerland calls on UN to check Libya detention centres

At a meeting of European and African ministers in Tunisia, the Swiss Justice Minister Simonetta Sommaruga says Libya should work with the UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration to make sure the rights of those detained are respected.

There have been reports of violence, sexual abuse and even torture.

Sommaruga described the situation in Libya as ‘complex’ and there will be no long term solution until the country stabilizes.

The ministerial meeting concluded the only way to limit migration to Europe was to collaborate against people traffickers and address the root causes.
