EU immigration down sharply
The number of people moving to Switzerland is down heavily – especially from EU countries - figures from the State Secretariat for Migration show.
Non-Swiss make up almost a quarter of the population – with most from European countries.
In the first half of this year, immigration is down by 12% with 25,500 arriving in the first six months.
It’s unclear why the numbers are down – but it could be due to increased efforts by right wing political parties to prioritize Swiss nationals over foreigners for job openings. The move is part of a compromise following the 2014 referendum when the people voted to end free movement with the EU.
