Man drowns in Rhone in Geneva
A man drowned while swimming in the Rhone River in Geneva yesterday afternoon. Despite a large rescue effort triggered by several calls to the police, the man was pronounced dead after being helicoptered to hospital.
The air ambulance was called which picked up a police diver from the roof of a local police station. Several boats were launched to search for the victim and sunbathers were asked to leave the river.
Police say the victim was a Nigerian national in his twenties. Witnesses say the man was playing football on the bank with a friend and slipped and fell into the water – when the current carried him away.
