The accident happened yesterday on the Aiguille de Varan, not far from Sallanches. The man had made the flight with two other people. He had previously completed hundreds of jumps.

Wingsuit flying involves jumping from a high point and gliding through the air using a complex wingsuit which adds surface area to the human body, with fabric between the legs and underneath the arms. A parachute is deployed to bring the jumper safely down to earth.

French investigators say that they don’t know, as yet, why the man’s parachute didn’t open.
