Renovation of Bern station gets underway
Major construction work has begun to expand Bern railway station, a building project that will cost one billion Swiss francs and won’t be finished until 2025.
Bern station is the second busiest in the country after Zurich.
The construction work will see a four-track underground railway being built below the southern part of the main station, for the regional Bern to Solothurn service. A pedestrian walkway on a lower level will also be built.
Around 202,000 passengers pass through Bern’s main train station every day from Monday to Friday.
The train station has been described as ‘full to bursting point’ with its current size no longer meeting its operating needs.
