Canton Bern plans to house asylum seekers in containers
Canton Bern is planning to use former temporary construction accommodation to house asylum seekers in Biel.
The accommodation is commonly used for workers and is a familiar sight at building sites. Dormitories and offices are based on transportation containers and can be stacked to save space.
88 units are becoming available as work on a new section of the A16 autoroute in the Jura comes to an end.
The canton wants to use the temporary accommodation for around 200 refugees. Authorities say there will be a maximum limit of three years for anyone living in the units.
