The car slid off the road during a racing event over the weekend. It rolled down the hill and burst into flames. His fellow Grand Tour presenters, Jeremy Clarkson and James May, say they genuinely believed Hammond had been killed.

But Hammond managed to get out of the car just in time – helped by the driver’s door being ripped off during the crash.

The famous motoring trio are in Switzerland filming an episode for their Amazon TV show.

Hammond has had several pins put into his leg – he joked from his hospital bed he’ll now have a ‘Swiss army knee’.
