Questions over Geneva police request for firepower
Geneva police could get 150 military standard assault rifles, designed to cope with the current terrorist threat.
But MPs in the cantonal parliament divided down the traditional left/right divide on questioning if the cantonal police force should be militarized.
Some claimed the nature of modern policing has changed and the police need new weaponry – others ask the question if as many as 150 rifles are needed for a relatively small police force.
Also on the shopping list are bullet proof vests, helmets and equipment to stop vehicles.
In all, the police are asking for CHF 5m to upgrade their fire power. The new rifles will have a range of 100 meters – compared to 30 meters the machine guns they currently use.
