CERN could get massive upgrade - in a few decades
CERN, the particle physics laboratory on the Swiss French border in Geneva could get a massive upgrade.
At a meeting in Germany, hundreds of scientists gathered to talk about the Future Circular Collider which will be 10 times the size of the current LHC.
The new machine will need a massive new tunnel which would pass under the lake and behind the Salève – running at nearly 100 km long.
If completed, the collisions produced will be enormously more powerful and may unlock more secrets of the universe.
But don’t hold your breath for it – if given the go ahead the new tunnel is still likely to be decades away.
