Swiss voters agree to new energy plan
Swiss voters have said, ‘No Thanks’ to nuclear power. In a vote yesterday, 58% said they backed the government’s green energy plan.
The government says it wants to invest heavily in renewable power and cut the country’s dependence on imported fossil fuels and nuclear power.
But the vote was uneven across the country – in the regions that have atomic power plants, voters there rejected the move. Probably on fears of job losses. And other detractors say it will mean power shortages in the winter.
Nuclear power will be closed down in stages – the first reactors going off line will be in 2019.
