Voters to decide on future of nuclear power this weekend
Voters will decide this weekend on whether the country should phase out nuclear power. The government wants to provide more renewable sources of power, especially wind, solar, geothermal and biomass generation. Switzerland already has a high level of hydro-electric capability.
The government and parliament are urging the people to approve the plan, which will also reduce the country’s dependence on imported fossil fuels.
It’s likely the people will follow the recommendations – but support does seem to be waning as the memory of the Japanese nuclear disaster fades, worries over unsightly wind farms increases and on fears of higher energy costs for households.
