Poor winter season for Switzerland
Provisional figures from the Swiss tourist board are confirming what many people would expect – it’s been a difficult winter for visitors.
The lack of snow at the beginning of the winter season – December was one of the driest on record –meant ski lift operators reported a poor start. January did provide a little relief, but an early spring in February dragged the numbers down again.
Although overnight stays were up slightly on last year – by half a percent – it’s not much to celebrate as last year was very poor as well.
The combination of the poor snow and high franc is hitting European visitors very hard – but there is a bright spot. Tourists from further afield are climbing. There were more people coming from India, China and the United States. But the weakness of the Euro against the Franc led to a fall in visits from Germany and France.
