Mayday marches pass off fairly peacefully
Although the police were geared up for trouble yesterday – thousands of demonstrators took to the streets peacefully for the traditional Mayday marches.
Unions say there were over 50 marches in 20 cantons yesterday – the biggest in Zurich had 12,000 people.
Some local shops and businesses were expecting trouble and so had closed and boarded up their windows.
In the event, the only arrests came when the march passed the Turkish consulate. Some people smeared the walls with red paint and daubed anti-Erdogan slogans.
