Swiss government issues measured response to Turkey vote
The Swiss government is reacting cautiously to the referendum result in Turkey which hands almost dictatorial powers to president Erdogan.
The foreign ministry says its notes the result – but isn’t commenting on alleged irregularities. It says it believes in democratic principles such as the separation of powers, the right to free speech and an independent judiciary.
It also adds any plans to bring back the death penalty would be in contravention of many international treaties Turkey has signed.
The ministry is calling on Turkey to respect basic human rights.
