Crime continues to fall in Switzerland - domestic violence remains a problem
Crime is continuing to fall in Switzerland. Figures from the Federal Statistical Office shows a 4% fall in criminal activity across the board last year.
Murders are down. In 2016, 45 people were killed. That’s a fall of 21%. But there was a rise in attempted murder, up 33% to 187.
But burglaries have always been a serious problem in Switzerland – especially for towns close to borders.
Those figures are also encouraging. Break-ins were down 11% at 48,000.
Domestic violence remains a problem though. In 2016, eighteen women and one man died in violent incidents in the home. That works out as one woman dying every 20 days in Switzerland. But even this is an improvement – down 47% from 2015.
