Programme of housing asylum seekers deemed a success
The Swiss programme of housing asylum seekers with families is being hailed as a success. Currently 22 cantons – out of 26 –have a system in place to give refugees a caring place to live.
Two years ago there were only 2 cantons offering the programme. Now 234 people are living with a family.
The idea struggled to take off initially, down mainly to strict conditions – such as having a separate bathroom. Those requirements have since been lifted.
One family told the SonntagsBlick newspaper they believe the refugees integrate and learn the language faster when living in a home.
