High winds yesterday cut power in many villages, brought down trees and damaged buildings.

Although power has been restored - forecasters say more high winds are expected and engineers remain on alert.

Gusts reached 140 kph in some areas.

But the cold snap brought much needed snow to some resorts. In the Alps, as much as 30 cm of fresh snow fell.

Today marks the meteorological start of spring – but it will stay cold and windy for the next few days.
