Coop now charging for plastic bags

National News // Feb. 15, 2017

The supermarket chain Coop has joined Migros and now no longer issues free plastic bags. Since the beginning of the week, all shops across the country will charge 5 centimes for a bag.

If your local Coop’s been charging for a while, that’s because it was part of the test phase of the plan. The supermarket has now rolled it out everywhere as the public supported the measure and plastic bag use was cut by 85% in the shops that were charging.

The next stage will be stocking biodegradable bags. Not all are. Although the bags are made up of recycled plastic – they are not recyclable and will end in landfill sites.
