Another 5 years before Swiss jets will be 24 hour operational
It’s still going to be another five years before the Swiss Air Force will have jets ready to intercept aircraft 24 hours a day.
The country was embarrassed back in 2014 when a hijacked Ethiopian Airlines jet had to be escorted to Geneva Airport by French and Italian fighters as the Swiss Air Force didn’t operate outside working hours.
The government has released funds so the jets will be ready 24 hours a day – but keeping fighter jets ready to go at a moment’s notice is notoriously complex and expensive.
But from January, Swiss fighters will be ready at weekends if necessary.
