Successful first services through Gotthard Tunnel
Swiss Federal Railways are celebrating a successful start to services through the 57km long Gotthard Tunnel.
A few minutes later the first freight train pulled into the station which had the Basel specialty of Läckerli ready to hand out to the welcoming crowds.
The tunnel took 17 years to build.
Commuters across the country today will have to check timetables as today is the first working day of a new schedule which will affect every train service. The changes were necessary to take into account the new tunnel.
