Hundreds of people turned up in Lugano to welcome the first passenger train to arrive from Basel yesterday morning. It arrived on time, at 8.17am.

A few minutes later the first freight train pulled into the station which had the Basel specialty of Läckerli ready to hand out to the welcoming crowds.

The tunnel took 17 years to build.

Commuters across the country today will have to check timetables as today is the first working day of a new schedule which will affect every train service. The changes were necessary to take into account the new tunnel.
