In local votes, Zurich voters categorically rejected a proposal to recognize marriage as only between a man and a woman. The initiative was put forward by the ultra-conservative group – the Federal Democratic Union. 80% of voters said ‘no’ – but the canton argued the issue was rightly a federal concern.
In Geneva, the people approved a slight loosening of the Sunday trading laws – shops will be permitted to open for 4 Sundays a year – over 57% agreed to the move. Also, the Genevois said ‘yes’ to spending CHF 8M on renovating the Plain de Plainpalais.
Switzerland will not get a new national park. The communes straddling the cantonal border of Graubünden and Ticino said ‘no’ to protect Adula Park. Many locals felt the restrictions were too strict – even not allowing a new barn to be built.
Canton Obwalden now becomes the second canton to abolish inheritance tax after Schwyz. The move will cost the canton over half a million a year.
